This movie started the awakening and after 911 and wars, when the truth started to leak out, it really exploded. People still study it’s deep meanings and comparisons to the real world.
Before that, it was just bullet-time and fashion.

Yes, you are correct…
The movie implies that as long as you belong to the system but do not form it, you are fuel for the corporate-machine (or a copper top)…
Basically a parallel for western-corporate society, where average people are considered labour resources, hence providing fuel for corporatism. Workers are coerced into working by being offered fake crap that isn’t essential.
‘The Matrix’ is definately anti- establishment and anarchistic.

you are right, the whole movie is parallel to our western society
they let us live in a world with all that crap to buy, we live for the money but this just hides the truth
