“The Hitcher” (2007) is great! This is another hit from the producers of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) & its prequel (2006) & “The Amityville Horror” (2005). The directing by Dave Meyers is great! Sean Bean is a great fit in the role of John Ryder, which was originated by Rutger Hauer. The screenplay by Eric Red (based on his 1986 screenplay of the original), Jake Wade Wall, and Eric Bernt is great! The music by Steve Jablonsky (who also did the music to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” & its prequel, and also “The Amityville Horror”, “The Island” (2005) & the upcoming “Transformers” (2007) is great! The cinematography by James Hawkinson is great! The film editing by Jim May (who also film edited “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” (2006) is great! The casting by Lisa Fields (who also did the casting to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” & its prequel and also “The Amityville Horror”) is great! The production design by David Lazan is great! The art direction by Rob Simons is great! The set decoration by Randy Huke (who also did the set decoration to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” & its prequel) is great! The costume design by Leeann Radeka (who was one of the key costumers on “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”) is great! This is a great remake that is faithful to its original.

Who can’t believe how the killer can be that almighty, smart and omnibus, and how weak the storyline is in this movie, I do not recommend!!!

The only reason I watched and wanted this film is because of Sean Bean…I don’t know why I like him, but I just think he is a fabulous actor…THE ORIGINAL RULESS!!!!

If you’re going to pick up a Hitcher, be sure that it’s the original from 1986 The Hitcher .

In 1981, Rutger Hauer made his American film debut as diabolical terrorist “Wulfgar” in Nighthawks Nighthawks . 5 years later he appeared in the original The Hitcher in the role of John Ryder, one of the most ruthless serial psycho killers ever to be born on the big screen.

The 1986 version had a very 80s feel to it then, and re-watching it this past weekend, I can say that it is indeed very 80s. But it’s very well done. There are some over-the-top stunts that would have killed any ordinary serial killer. But that was part of the mystique of John Ryder. Was he human? Was he a monster? Was he the Devil?

The Hitcher’s director in 1986 was Robert Harmon, who pretty much tuned to TV after The Hitcher, which is probably a good thing because the “TV camp” definitely came through in a lot of his original version of The Hitcher, but overall it was exciting and unforgettable.

Fast Forward 21 years and music video Director Dave Meyers re-does 1986’s The Hitcher with an all new cast and a few minor story changes. Yes…I said “re-does” as opposed to “re-makes”. A re-make is when a director takes an old film, sometimes even a classic, and makes it better. A re-do is when a director takes a film and adds nothing to the original (and in most cases makes it worse). The 2007 version of The Hitcher is a re-do.

While the 2007 version definitely does take the 80s feel out of the original, it also takes a lot out of the fiendish, classic villain that was created by Rutger Hauer. Sean Bean is in the role of John Ryder in the 2007 version. Yes, Bean has played his share of villains, so he had no problem as a bad guy in The Hitcher 2007, but it was like taking Robert Englund out of Freddy Krueger…it just wasn’t the same.

Look, I’m not a big preservationist that thinks remaking good original movies should be taboo. I just think that a re-make should indeed be that…a re-make…not a re-do.

So regardless of what your Mom has told you….You can indeed pick up a Hitcher; just make sure that it’s the original.
